legs, because half-nekkid moments are good for the soul.

"How come you don't dress like that around the office?"

It was the look in his eye when he said it. That animal glint. Cold. Possessive. Hungry. At least that's what I told myself. Though if I'm being honest, I knew it was coming long before that.

"I rather assumed it unprofessional." I flashed him a smile that felt like a grimace, swallowing my contempt. He sat in his shirtsleeves, smoking, his fedora on the bed beside him. His coat was a puddle on the floor, just inside the door. I hated myself for what I'd done. For what I had to do. Soon, though, it'd all be worth it.

"Sweetheart, you wanna come to work dressed like that, it's jake with me. Them getaway sticks a yours ain't so bad to look at."

"I thought you were on a case," I said, rising slowly to my feet.

"Who says I'm not?"

A case. Right. He hadn't had a proper case in weeks. Nothing but smash-and-snap. Which meant me, in seedy bars and seedier hotels, making nice with sleaze so he gould get the pics. Hell of a way to make a living.

I crossed the room, scooping his coat up off the floor. His gaze followed the length of my body, settling a little south of my face.

He didn't notice as I slid the .38 from his jacket pocket, or as I took aim from beneath the battered trench coat. Soon, he wouldn't notice anything. Not ever again.

I thought about the money cooling out in the office safe. The safe I wasn't supposed to know about. So smart, he thought, but a guy will tell you anything, if you just know how to ask.

The gun was cold and heavy in my hand. I knew it was time.

And as that cruel glint in his eye guttered and died, I smiled.
