"Am I your favorite?"

"I wasn't always like this, you know."
"What?"
"When the world was younger, I mean."
"I don't understand."
"How could you? You're a refurbished Galaga, no memory but of this place. This way-station. Here, we're lucky to entertain for a fleeting moment the bored, jaded souls that happen by, destined for elsewhere, but for me, it wasn't always so."
"Really?"
"There's no need to take that tone with me. Look at these callouses. Listen to the creak of that hinge. You think these things just happen? No, my friend -- I was once a star. They'd gather around, dozens of them, breath sweet with pop and candy, pockets heavy with change, desperate to be the one to best me."
"And did they?"
"Did they best me? Aye, on occasion. I'd LET them of course. Just to get a taste. To keep them coming back."
"Sure, old man."
"My hand to God. May I be unplugged if I'm lyin'."
"So where'd they all go?"
"Where do they ever? Moved on, I suppose. Somethin' shinier. Newer. Fancier. I swear, i'd throw every damn round just to have 'em back."
"Would you? Would you, really?"
"Dunno. Might....
There was a girl the other day. carrying a camera. She liked me, I think. Not even new, not even shiny. She liked me, I think."
"Did she play?"
"Nah. They never do."
A game that would drive a germ phobic person to suicide! :)
is that you monkey? it sounds like you.
indeed, carl, though i never would have thought about it that way...but then, i'm not germ-phobic, unless you count the avian flu...
Not Monkey (at least, I don't THINK so. You're not in the habit of choosing nicknames for strangers, are you? If so, you may just be qualified to be President.) Just a random act of fiction from a random passer-by, taking a stroll through Next Blog after Next Blog. He just looked like he had a story, you know? of course, the problem with the anonymous comment is the lack of editorial control. Typos and poor rhythm abound.
Cheers,
c
oooh, not monkey.
now i'm intrigued.
Well, I AM terribly intriguing.
chris chris chris Holm... ever nspend any time in jerseY?
no, indeed, it wasn't me, although I -did- get a little misty-eyed reading it...
